What it is
Excessive sweating is sweating that keeps going when you are not hot and not exerting yourself. Under the arms it can soak through a shirt on an ordinary day at a desk, and no antiperspirant holds it for long.
It is not a hygiene problem and it is not something you are doing wrong. The sweat glands in one area are simply being asked to work harder than the body needs them to.

Why it happens
Sweating is driven by nerve signals reaching the sweat glands. In excessive sweating those signals are overactive in one area, so the glands keep working when there is nothing to cool down.

Heat, exercise, caffeine, alcohol, spiced food and anything you are anxious about will all raise it, and most people know their own triggers long before they come to us. Managing them helps, and for a lot of people it is not enough on its own.

When to see someone
- Sweating that soaks through clothing on an ordinary day
- Changing a shirt during the day, or choosing clothes around sweat marks
- Antiperspirants, including the stronger ones, no longer holding it
- Sweating that makes you avoid raising a hand, shaking hands or dancing
When to speak to your GP first
- Sweating that has started suddenly or changed recently
- Sweating that wakes you at night
- Sweating alongside other symptoms that are new to you
- Sweating that began after starting a new medicine
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
