What it is
A fine line is a shallow crease that shows when you smile, frown or raise your brows, and goes when your face relaxes. A wrinkle is the same crease after it has settled into the skin, so it is visible when the face is still.
The difference decides the treatment. A line made by movement is softened by relaxing the muscle that folds it. A line sitting in skin that has thinned and lost its own firmness needs the skin rebuilding instead, and most people who come to us have some of both.
At Skinfolk that is anti-wrinkle injections for the first, and Profhilo or Morpheus 8 for the second. All injectable treatments here are performed by our founder Dr Chloe or her sister Dr Eloise, and what is treated is decided at your consultation rather than before it.
Why it happens
Skin creases where it folds and thins where collagen is lost, and both happen to everyone. The reasons people give us are ordinary ones.
- Expression, because the same small muscles fold the same skin thousands of times a year
- Collagen and elastin falling away from the mid twenties onwards, so skin is slower to spring back
- Years of sun, which is the largest avoidable cause of lined skin
- Falling oestrogen through the perimenopause and the menopause, when skin thins and dries more quickly
- Smoking, broken sleep and dehydration, which show first around the eyes and the mouth

Sun is the one to change first, because it works against anything done in clinic, and daily protection is worth more than any single appointment. After that it is the ordinary things: too little sleep, too little water, smoking, and a routine that exfoliates hard but never rebuilds. Starting a course of skin treatment and stopping halfway is the other one, because skin quality is built across months rather than in an afternoon.

When to see someone
- A line that is still there once your face has relaxed
- Forehead lines, frown lines or crow's feet that photograph deeper than they feel
- Skin that reads dull, dry and crepey as well as lined
- Fine lines arriving alongside other menopausal skin changes
- Wanting to start before a moving line becomes a fixed one
When something else is the answer

- Skin that has dropped along the jaw and neck rather than lined, where HIFU works at a depth these treatments do not reach
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding, when injectable treatments are not offered
- Active infection or inflamed skin in the area to be treated

It starts with a consultation. We go through the lines that bother you, the way your own face moves, what you already use on your skin and your medical history, and only then is anything booked in.
Anti-wrinkle injections are the first treatment we reach for where the line moves with the face, across the forehead, between the brows and around the eyes. One area is £160, two areas are £225 and three areas are £290, and the appointment takes 30 minutes.
Where the skin itself has thinned, Profhilo is the treatment that hydrates and firms across the whole area rather than filling one line. It is £275, and three areas of anti-wrinkle injections with Profhilo is £485 for 45 minutes. Where crepiness, texture and fine lines sit together, Morpheus 8 works deeper again at £500 for 60 minutes and is planned as a course.
The change from anti-wrinkle injections comes on gradually over the days that follow rather than the same afternoon, and the skin quality treatments build over the weeks after them. A review appointment is offered so we can see how treatment has settled.

Movement and time together. The same muscles fold the same skin thousands of times a year, and from the mid twenties onwards there is less collagen and elastin holding it, so the crease is slower to disappear and eventually stays. Sun exposure and the fall in oestrogen through the menopause both speed that up.

What is the difference between a fine line and a wrinkle?
A fine line is visible only while the face is moving. A wrinkle is there when the face is still. The first is usually treated by softening the movement, the second by rebuilding the skin as well, which is why the two are often treated together.
When is the right time to start?
There is no set age. The useful moment is when a line you only used to see while moving has started to stay, because a line treated at that point is a shorter piece of work than one left for years. We will tell you at consultation if we think you do not need treatment yet.
